install question - 8.1.7 [message #224303]

Installing Oracle 8.1.7 on Solaris 8

I performed the pre-installation steps (or at least I think I did). I ran the runInstaller program (as the oracle user) - and when I get to the part asking for the Inventory location, I choose the default (/opt/oracle/product/oraInventory), I get error message

"Could not create the Inventory Location"

Any ideas? One portion I did not go thru on the pre-install was the mounting of directories (/u01) or something like that. I skipped that part because the doc siad I'd have the option to run orainstRoot.sh instead when runnning the Install - this script would ensure all the variables, accounts, parameters, etc are set.

You need to ensure that you have the appropriate privileges to do the install and that the path is writable and has the appropriate permissions.

Oracle 8.1.x is an unsupported version of Oracle.

What does that have to do with the OP's question. The fact that it is unsupported doesn't mean it can't be installed.

I am doing this as the oracle user. Yes, it appears I do not have permissions. However I am going through the Installation documentation, and nowhere does it explicitly say I have to assign or change permissions.

Here is the doc I'm following:

I find this documentation extremely frustrating. I tells you to do something but doesnt provide you the steps to do it!

Well, you would of course have to have write privileges on any directory you want to create files in. It might not mention it in the documentation as it is common sense. Get root to chmod up a couple of directories for you.

Ok, thank-you. I gave 777 permissions under the /opt folder. The documentation should have at least had a note about this. Assuming a customer is going to know this is ridiculous.

Onto my next problem. I am being asked for "Database File Location". I've googled on this -a nd it appears it wants you to specify the a mount location or something? Where is this? Earlier in the documentation (during pre-installation steps) it mentions to creatoe 'Mount Points'. Of course it tells you to do it, but NOT HOW! Is this what I'm missing? Is this what I'm supposed to enter for the Databsae file location? I've pasted the contents of the documentation where it states to create mount points Very ambiguous Sad

Create Mount Points
Oracle8i requires at least two mount points:
one for the software
at least one for the database files
It requires at least four mount points when creating an Optimal Flexible
Architecture (OFA)-compliant installation:
one for the software
at least three for database files.
All software and database mount point names used for Oracle8i should match the
pattern /pm, where p is a string constant and m is a fixed-length key to distinguish
between mount points. Table 2–2, "Sample Mount Point Naming Scheme", on
page 2-6 shows a sample naming scheme.

On what OS name & version are you doing this installation?
P.S.
Oracle is NOT Access & those doing the installtion should be functional WRT the OS on which Oracle is being installed.
It sounds to me that your know neither Oracle nor *nix; which is a recipe for disaster waiting to occur.

I do agree that the Oracle documentation is not as verbose as it should be sometimes and in early releases it seemed to be even less verbose. It may help to look at the Oracle 10gR2 Preinstall Tasks to get an idea of the general process. Although the doc is for 10gR2, you can reference it to obtain more information on the O/S pre-install details.

When it says mount points, it just means base directory. I have to agree with anacedent here, the installer should have knowledge of the OS or the installer should in fact be the sysadmin. Nothing goes into /opt. Maybe a subdirectory under /opt, but that would be noted in the pre-install tasks like ebrian mentioned.

Ok, just a comment...and was made in order to avoid efforts in obsolete Oracle versions.

"Unsupported mean you're alone if you have a serious problem"
"Unsupoorted mean that all data could be lose and nobody is responsible of that"
"Unsupported is in fact a risk" ... although it is not a productive installation
